Thanks, Buzz:

HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has published an
emergency-preparedness pocket guide that provides resources to help
hospitals design, conduct and evaluate their own emergency-
preparedness exercises, with the aim of improving response
capabilities.

Here is a direct Link to AHRQ so you don't have to go through the
ModernHealthcare.com website. This was just released this morning so
it's new information.

USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance is looking for generalist
disaster surge temps for on-call positions. It pays at GS-14 level,
which is pretty high:
If I was about to retire, this would be #1 on my "keeping my hands in
it" job wish list:

Fwd: [EM] Resources on Hospital Exercises and Radiation Response

Hospital Preparedness Exercise Resources, AHRQ
http://www.ahrq.gov/prep/hospex.htm

These resources can help hospital preparedness exercise coordinators plan for, design and develop, conduct, evaluate, and improve hospital preparedness exercises.

The Hospital Preparedness Exercises Atlas of Resources and Tools describes nearly 200 resources and tools that are available to help exercise coordinators meet Federal funding requirements and accreditation standards throughout the exercise cycle. Each entry provides descriptive and citation information for the resource or tool.

The Hospital Preparedness Exercises Guidebook complements the Atlas, serving as a reference for planning, conducting, and evaluating exercises and for how to comply with accreditation standards and Federal guidelines.

The accompanying Hospital Preparedness Exercises Pocket Guide serves as a quick reference, summarizing the Guidebook.

Radiation Issues. "Medical Aspects of Radiation Incidents" Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Radiation. The Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site. 2010.
http://orise.orau.gov/reacts/resources/radiation-accident-management.aspx

The Medical Aspects of Radiation Incidents provides the basic information needed for the medical management of victims of radiation incidents in an easy-to-understand manner.

Among the topics discussed in The Medical Aspects of Radiation Incidents are:

* basic health physics and dose estimation (US and SI units)
* treatment of whole body and acute local irradiation issues
* assessment and treatment of internal contamination with radioactive materials
* patient decontamination
* delayed effects of exposure to ionizing radiation
* risk and psychological issues

<http://m.fema.gov/> , but what we didn't have was a blog. Well, now that we
have one, you're probably wondering what you can expect.

Plain and simple, this will be another tool we'll use to communicate and let
you know what we're up to. This won't be another way to put out our press
releases - this is a way to communicate directly with you.

You'll eventually hear from team members from across our agency, from our
regional offices to our field offices, supporting local disaster recovery
efforts. We will provide information before, during and after disaster
strikes and we will highlight best practices, innovative ideas, and insights
that are being used across emergency management and across the country.

So as we get our blog up and running, we'll also be looking to you for
ideas, tips and feedback. If you have a question you'd like us to address,

us know. We're looking to you - the rest of our team - to be our partners in
this endeavor. Leave a comment below and let's start the conversation.

PhilaU Connect - January 19, 2011

PhilaU Connect: Professional International Presentations

Will be presenting

“Understanding First Responder Stress Reactions:
A Vital Component of any Training Program"

January 19, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

Research shows that most people involved in a critical incident (Trauma) will develop some stress reactions. Most reactions will be mild but the more intense stress reactions can and often will interfere with one’s ability to functional properly in the midst of a crisis.

First responders such as police, firefighters and emergency workers have been shown to be particularly vulnerable to the development of stress reactions as they are often exposed to traumatic events in their day-to-day work experiences. These reactions can include fatigue, acute stress reaction and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These very same first responders are relied upon to help mitigate the effects of trauma on individuals, businesses and the community at large. This session will examine the stress reactions particular to first responders and the use of this knowledge in the training of and support for those individuals.

The PhilaU Connect will be given by Samuel A. Miller (M.A.). Sam is a Resourceful Therapist with extensive experience in Trauma Response and Treatment as well as Wellness Programs. He has demonstrated strengths in leadership, coaching and communication. Sam has worked with many organizations and corporations in creating healthy, respectful, workplace environments as well as managing work-related traumatic events. Mr. Miller is a consultant based in Toronto.

Instructions outlining how to join the PhilaU Connect will be sent via email prior to the event. Each PhilaU Connect presentation will include a certificate of attendance emailed to the attendee. Questions or to register, please contact Annette Solarski at solarskia@philau.edu.

DHS Publishes the 2nd Edition of the Risk Lexicon

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) improves its ability to make risk-informed decisions by conducting systematic and structured assessments of homeland security risk. This ongoing effort includes the development of processes and tools to gather, integrate, analyze, and communicate information about risk. These tools, like the DHS Risk Lexicon aid the Homeland Security Enterprise in strategically prioritizing efforts and resources.

Clear and unambiguous communication among homeland security risk practitioners, decisionmakers, and stakeholders is necessary to achieve integrated risk management. The DHS Risk Lexicon supports integrated risk management by defining a single language for risk management and analysis. The DHS Risk Lexicon makes available an official set of harmonized risk-related terms and definitions.
