The Next Challenge in Health Care Preparedness Catastrophic Health Events

May 26, 2010 -- 12:00 Noon Eastern

EMForum.org is pleased to host a one hour presentation and interactive discussion Wednesday, May 26, 2010, beginning at 12:00 Noon Eastern time (please convert to your local time). Our topic, "The Next Challenge in Health Care Preparedness: Catastrophic Health Events," takes its title from a report issued by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Center for Biosecurity this past January, under a project funded by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

A previous UPMC study concluded that "the U.S. healthcare system is ill-prepared for catastrophic health events (CHE), and there is as yet no clear strategy that will enable an effective response to such an event." The current preparedness report proposes key elements of a national strategy for healthcare preparedness and response, including recommendations and actions leading to a healthcare system capable of responding to the full spectrum of mass casualty events.

Our guest will be Eric Toner, M.D., Senior Associate with the Center for Biosecurity at UPMC and Principal Investigator of a multi-year project to evaluate the achievements of the HHS Hospital Preparedness Program. He is also leading a project for HHS to improve healthcare
situational awareness. Dr. Toner has authored numerous articles on hospital and pandemic preparedness, and has organized several meetings of national leaders on the topic of hospital preparedness for pandemic influenza and mass casualty disasters.
