On September 9, Warner Brothers will be releasing the movie Contagion, a fictional drama that portrays CDC and other U.S. and international partners responding to an emerging infectious disease outbreak. We are reaching out to you in an effort to take advantage of this opportunity to provide accurate and potentially life-saving information to the public about how to prepare for a public health emergency.

Call for Papers
Issue 1: Terrorism and Violence
The Inaugural edition of the Journal of International Relations Research (JIRR) will be themed around Terrorism and Violence. We invite submissions from authors in a variety of formats including reviews, blogs, polemics and full-length articles. To be published in (traditional) electronic text format AND in a dynamic web version featuring interactive multimedia features that make the most of web 2.0.

The human fascination with violence and terrorism is evident in the wealth of multimedia news reporting as well as academic and popular writing on the subject. But how does this reflect on society and the subject matter at hand? Are contemporary narratives, explanations and analyses providing fruitful or even sufficient representations of the realities? JIRR would venture not and invites the world IR community to contest this assumption.
We welcome submissions focusing on individual and group level explanations for the trend of engagement in terrorism and violence. Be it on an empirical, philosophical or theoretical basis, JIRR ascribes no preferred method; our only stipulation is for quality and originality of the contribution. Examining the dynamics of counter-terrorism bodies should also be considered, as should the media coverage and aspects of public debate, philosophy and response.
Articles that represent comprehensive academic research into terrorism and violence are most welcome, be they in the guise of chapters of forthcoming works that read well as stand-alone pieces or as purposefully structured journal articles contesting issues in the field. Polemics are intended to be shorter essays designed to be countenances to work authored previously or critical and controversial pieces designed to raise questions and shape future debate. We also welcome entertaining reviews of relevant books, film and other media that speaks to IR debates on terrorism and violence.
JIRR is uniquely set up to accommodate a range of multimedia aspects and authors wishing to submit in non-traditional formats are encouraged. This subject would lend itself well to a photo-essay for instance or video report. As an Open Access Online journal we will feature video, pictures, diagrams and other dynamic features that help to illustrate the issues at hand. This distinctive characteristic of JIRR obviously equips the journal well for coverage of Terrorism in its 21st century guise and authors are encouraged to think of novel ways to supplement their written paper with multimedia referencing.
The ultimate issue publication deadline is 1st December, though submissions should be sent in well in advance of this date to ensure publication. Once complete the article/polemic/review will be published online in our dynamic web format, in advance of the publication of the text and download versions.

'Liquid Bomb Plot' special is gripping investigation of terrorism
Peroxide and Tang helped change the rules at the nation's airports - and
nearly led to a disaster
comparable to 9/11.
"The Liquid Bomb Plot," a documentary with dramatic reconstructions that
airs at 9 p.m. EDT Sunday
on National Geographic Channel, chronicles the investigation of a 2006 plan
to blow up a host of
airplanes traveling from London to the United States.
Had the plot been successful, 19 conspirators - the same number as the 9/11
terrorists - would have
taken down seven planes over the Atlantic, killing thousands of people in
the process. Instead, the plot
was foiled and close to a dozen men were convicted of terrorism-related
offenses. But doing so involved
what England's Telegraph newspaper called "one of the most complex and
costliest criminal
investigations since the Second World War." Indeed, even shadowing one
conspirator could involve as
many as a dozen British agents.
In order to skirt the security measures already in place, the plot involved
small bombs made in part from
hydrogen peroxide and Tang injected into beverage bottles. The bottles were
drained from a hole in the
base, then refilled, so the cap seal was intact.
At the time, the drink containers would not have attracted undue attention
from security personnel.
When the plot was uncovered, carrying liquids onto airplanes was banned at
first; now detailed rules
about quantities and contents are in place. (See

The two-hour National Geographic special, which includes extensive
interviews with British and
American security officials, traces how the bomb plot was uncovered in
enthralling detail. Things began
to unravel for the conspirators after one, Abdulla Ahmed Ali, was found to
have some suspicious items
in a bag surreptitiously searched when he flew into London from Pakistan.
(Pakistan, whose relations
with the U.S. have been especially strained since the death of Osama bin
Laden, is seen in a less than
positive light here, too.)
From that moment we get a step-by-step - and often re-enacted - portrayal of
what followed and the
difficult decision faced by authorities: when to arrest the bomb plotters.
While it may have been clear
what was about to happen, that was somewhat different from what could be
proven in court; a hasty
arrest could lead to freedom for the bombers. At the same time, though, no
one in England or the U.S.
wanted to risk waiting so long that one of the bombings could happen. And

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I received a request from a friend and associate who has won a bid to
provide EMT strike teams, to be deployed during a disaster for short
term assignments. It sounds like an excellent opportunity for anyone
desiring to deploy for field work, but who can't afford to deploy for
2 weeks at a time as is the norm. He has asked me to reach out to my
contacts to see if anyone is interested. Here are the details…
Two and three man EMT strike teams for a client in Louisiana. Some
positions will be actually hands on (field triage). They are trying
to fill those via EMS agency agreements due to desiring to have
insurance carry forward. However, they are also willing to take
individuals to fill the slots. They also have lots of management and
staff positions available dealing with ambulance inspections, data
collection, EOC support, etc.
Pay is approximately $200 per day (12 hour shift). More for
supervisory positions and more for management and paramedic
positions. The minimum pay is for two shifts. They do not expect to
have any mission last more than 3 days.
The requirement is EMT/RN active license with high preference for ICS
300/400 certifications. ICS certifications are mandatory for any
management positions. Also looking for two years Field Triage
experience for those supporting that work effort.
