Disaster Tabletop Exercises for Health Care Providers

The DRC Group in coordination with Florida's Department of Health invites health care providers to participate in one of the scheduled tabletop exercises being facilitated via the internet during the months of September and October.

These exercises have been designed specifically for health care providers to evaluate and enhance existing Business Continuity and / or Emergency Operation Plans. In addition providers who do not currently have such plans will have an opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of what should be in their plan.

There is NO CHARGE for participation in any of the exercises.

Two distinctive types of exercises are available. One of the exercises will feature a hurricane scenario while the other involves a commercial fire which heavily damages your facility.

Epidemiological Surveillance and Public Health Preparedness

Location is a vital factor in disease surveillance, epidemiology and public health preparedness, but frequently public health experts do not have the training or resources to make use of traditional GIS and mapping tools.

In this webinar, Chasey Reed-Boston, MA, an analyst with the Brazoria, Texas, County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Division, will describe and demonstrate how Depiction mapping, simulation and collaboration software can be used to assess geographic trends, demographic trends and disease propagation trends by bringing together multiple datasets, both publicly available and proprietary, in a dynamic, interactive environment.

Using an inhalational anthrax scenario, Chasey Reed-Boston will show the value of Depiction in her work in public health preparedness.

The Trench Gascoigne Essay Competition 2010

Submissions are now open and will close on 29 October 2010.

The Trench Gascoigne Essay Prize, the Royal United Services Institute's annual competition awarded for original writing on contemporary issues of national and international defence and security issues, is now open for 2010.

The competition is open to authors of any nationality and entries are particularly welcome from – but not exclusive to – members of the Armed Forces. One or more prizes within a total of £1,000 may be awarded. The closing date for the 2010 Prize is 29 October 2010.

Those shortlisted for the prize will be invited to the annual Chief of Defence Staff lecture on 6 December 2010, where the winner will be announced. The winning essay will also be published in the RUSI Journal. Awards will be made on the basis of originality, logical argument, sound analysis, style, clarity and conciseness.

All essays entries should be sent either by email marked 'Trench Gascoigne Essay Prize' to Codner@rusi.org (preferred) or recorded delivery to:
