IAEM Student Chat, April 26th, 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time

Ruth Cover will be presenting on Thursday, April 26th at 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) via Adobe Connect, to all our students what is available at state and federal levels and will offer insight into the expanded roles of emergency management and the ESF #8 partners for the next 5 years. The federal government has helped states build capacity for health-related emergency preparedness for several years and has added many federal assets since 2001. As the public health and healthcare grants align and begin to coordinate with the State Homeland Security Grant program grants within the next 5 years, there will be closer coordination and collaboration between emergency managers and the healthcare sector will be required. Ruth's bio can be found in the Student Center.

Fwd: FW: [DISASTR-OUTREACH-LIB ] CALL FOR AUTHORS: Encyclopedia of Crisis Management

From: Disaster Information Outreach by Librarians [mailto:DISASTR-OUTREACH-LIB@LIST.NIH.GOV] On Behalf Of Joseph K. Golson
Sent: Wednesday, April 04, 2012 2:02 PM
To: DISASTR-OUTREACH-LIB@LIST.NIH.GOV
Subject: [DISASTR-OUTREACH-LIB ] CALL FOR AUTHORS: Encyclopedia of Crisis Management

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY

Greetings,

Now a growing and important research field, crisis management—as a formal area of study—is relatively young, having just emerged since the late 1980s following a succession of such calamities as the Bhopal gas leak, the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the financial crises of 2008. The analysis of the organizational failures that caused events such as these helped drive the emerging field of crisis management. Simultaneously, the number of natural disasters has increased as well. From this, we have learned that our modern, tightly interconnected and interdependent society is simply more vulnerable to disruption than in the past.

This interconnectedness is made possible in part by crisis management, while also increasing our reliance on it. As such, crisis management is as beneficial and crucial today as information technology has become over the last few decades. Successfully engaging, dealing with, and working through a crisis require an understanding of options and tools for individual and joint decision-making. The Encyclopedia of Crisis Management comprehensively explains concepts and techniques for effectively assessing, analyzing, managing, and resolving crises, whether they be organizational, business, community, or political. From general theories and concepts exploring the meaning and causes of crisis to practical strategies and techniques relevant to crises of specific types and categories, crisis management will be thoroughly introduced and explored in approximately 375 articles.

This comprehensive project will be published by SAGE Reference and will be marketed to academic and public libraries as a print and digital product available to students via the library's electronic services. The General Editors, who will be reviewing each submission to the project, are K. Bradley Penuel, Matt Statler, and Ryan Hagen at New York University.

We are currently making assignments with a deadline of May 15, 2012.

If you are interested in contributing to this cutting-edge reference, it is a unique opportunity to contribute to the contemporary literature, redefining sociological issues in today's terms. Moreover, it can be a notable publication addition to your CV/resume and broaden your publishing credits. SAGE Publications offers an honorarium ranging from SAGE book credits for smaller articles up to a free set of the printed product or access to the online product for contributions totaling 10,000 words or more.

The list of available articles is already prepared, and as a next step we will e-mail you the Article List (Excel file) from which you can select topics that best fit your expertise and interests. Additionally, Style and Submission Guidelines will be provided that detail article specifications.

If you would like to contribute to building a truly outstanding reference with the Encyclopedia of Crisis Management, please contact me by the e-mail information below. Please provide a brief summary of your academic/publishing credentials in related disciplines.

Thanks very much.

Ten Best Practices for Communication & Continuity
 During Mega-Disasters

By Tim Tinker and Tony Dorsey

Sponsored by the Mission Assurance TFG and the RCCC

Friday, March 30, 2012

1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.EST

McLean H1037

and Lync Online Meeting w/ Audio Conference
To Register, email Mary Aquino at aquino_mary@bah.com

Urgent and catastrophic events, whether man-made or naturally occurring, dramatically change the rules of communication for Booz Allen's government, commercial, and not-for-profit clients. Anything less than full anticipation, preparation, and practice can jeopardize their credibility with employees, the media, and the general public. Worse, it can result in disrupted operations, harm strategic relationships, and cause irreparable damage to reputations.

Equipped with basic tools and techniques, however, Booz Allen helps clients across all markets effectively anticipate potential crises, and prepare and practice their system-wide communication responses. Attend this event to hear about a three-part strategy for assessing the threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences of high-stress, high-concern events and their implications for communications and continuity. This strategy can address public concerns, establish trust, and mitigate concern.

Session Agenda

  • Communicating scientific & technical information
  • Understanding the media's needs & frustrations
  • Delivering messages that matter
  • Scenario-based simulation
Tim Tinker is located in Rockville, MD and can be reached at 301-444-4034 or tinker_timothy@bah.com.
